The youth who were in Guatemala in July are preparing a presentation about their trip and projects from each of youth groups in our partner presbyteries. Our youth would like to make a presentation about their trip as well as encourage churches through their mission committees, church school classes, etc. to financially support these projects. If you would like a presentation in your church, please contact Hannah Washburn, han_wash@yahoo.com, 828 898 4558 (home) or 828 260 5885 (cell). I promise that you will be blessed by being in the presence of these young people!
October 14 Gathering – The Guatemala Partnership Task Force is evaluating its current structure in light of our presbytery’s own changing structure. The executive Committee is meeting to discuss possible changes. All who have been involved or are interested in the Guatemala Partnership are invited to an important open discussion on how the Guatemala Partnership moves into the future. A time to reflect on all this will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton on Friday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m. There will be pizza ($1.00 per slice) and salad for those who want to come at 5:30 p.m. for supper. Make your reservation for the meal no later than Tuesday, October 12by contacting Ellen Dozier, ellendozier@hotmail.com or Randall Boggs, rbtoo@juno.com
There will be three parts of the trip to Guatemala in November – a delegation to visit partner churches, the health committee, and the executive committee; these committees will meet with their counterparts in the Guatemalan Presbyteries. Please bring any correspondence you would like to share with your partner church to our October 21, 22 Presbytery meeting at Lake Junaluska.
Remember that the deadline to receive scholarship money, for the 2012 school year in Guatemala (January – October) is November 1. Money should be sent to the Presbytery office and clearly marked for scholarship funds for your partner church. Those funds will be taken to Guatemala with the November delegation.
News from Guatemala
There will be a run-off presidential election in Guatemala between the two top candidates on Sunday, November 6. Please be in prayer for sisters and brothers there that this might be a peaceful election.
So far this has been a “normal” rainy season in Guatemala. Let us hope and pray that will continue through the rainy months of September and October and into November.
We have received a number of requests for prayer from different churches in Guatemala, prayers for those who are ill, families who have experienced the loss of loved ones, a family whose 13 year old daughter was kidnapped (thanks be to God she escaped). I have tried to notify each partner church here of these prayer requests. We give thanks to God that we are joined one to the other through the fellowship of prayer.
May we know the work of God’s Spirit among us,
Ellen Dozier
